|
His first appearance at the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall was in 1990 with the BBC Club Choir, and he has since conducted the New London Orchestra there in 1991, 1995, 1998 and 1999, and the BBC Concert Orchestra in 1996 and 1997, some of these being the ‘Family Prom’ and the ‘Children’s Prom’. He has also worked with the BBC Singers. He has conducted BBC TV’s Songs of Praise three times, most recently in 2010 with the New London Children’s Choir.
His extensive experience with choirs, choral music and composing for voices makes his book The Choral Singer’s Companion a singularly well informed, practical and useful volume.
Ron has made many commercial recordings with a wide range of performers. In a recording of his own orchestral works in 2009 he conducted the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2010, he recorded a rare gem of English opera, Rutland Boughton’s The Queen of Cornwall, which was released on the Dutton Epoch label. This attracted widespread acclaim including ‘Disc of The Month’ in Opera Magazine, March 2011 and ‘Editor’s Choice’ in Gramophone, September 20. Notable forthcoming events include Delius Sea Drift and Elgar’s Music Makers, Highgate Choral Society Saturday 11 March and Mahler 5 with Duet Philharmonic at the Royal Festival Hall on Monday 10 April, both this year. |
